Bidirectional Single Fibre Links for Base Station Remote Antenna Feeding

In this contribution the feasibility and performance of low-cost bidirectional single fibre links for analogue RF fibre-optic (FO) antenna feeding are investigated. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) allows transmission of uplink (λopt=1310nm) and downlink (λopt=1550nm) signals over one single standard fibre. Designs using low cost multiple quantum well Fabry-Pérot laser diodes (MQW FP LDs) in bidirectional transceiver modules or in separate receiver/transmitter modules are compared. Performance, requirements and costs for FO and conventional coax solutions are discussed.
